Once We Were Factories

Newtown has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. Today it is one of Sydney's most desirable suburbs to reside in, once it was part of the manufacturing heartland of Sydney. Many famous names including Bonds (clothing), Metters (stoves) and Fowlers (Ceramics) had their factories here. Accordingly the surrounding houses were filled with blue collar workers.
Today there is little evidence of the industry that once called the suburb home. The Bonds Factory building still exists and it's famous and iconic advertising emblem 'Chesty Bond' still looms over Camperdown Park. The building is now part of Sydney University and all Bonds products are made in China.
