The Sydney Fantasy

Paul Keating once said, "If you're not living in Sydney, you're camping out!" The maths would therefore suggest that that makes about 16 million Australians who are living in tents! I would further suggest that a high proportion of those 16 million are quite happy and grateful to be in their own 'campgrounds' and not residing in the precious real estate of the Emerald City.
The quote does say something about the place: it's showy, ostentatious, brash, supercilious, arrogant, and dazzling but just like the fabled capital of Oz, it is also wonderful!
There is nothing like a visit to excite and stimulate all of the senses. You walk out your door and within seconds there is something to experience that you will either love or hate. Nothing is done in half measures here.
I walked out of my rented door in Newtown and ran smack bang in this terrific mural just off Wilson St. Ah Sydney, you have got it all - but maybe deep down you really want to live in a tent like the rest of us.

  1. This is a terrific find, Mark. Must be the house of a fantasy novelist!

I was in a fast train zipping up to Newcastle the other morning, when we zipped past a whole bunch of murals just waiting to be photographed. I will have to organise a field trip along the railway line from Central to Stanmore.

  2. I probably seem kinda pedantic in correcting you, but Paul Keating 'recycled' the "If you're not living in Sydney, you're camping out" quote from its originator, Big Norm Erskine, the singer extraordinaire who said it back in the 1960s.

I know this only because I'm really old.

  3. Great capture, Mark, and I enjoyed your commentary. We've got some pretty fancy campsites in Melbourne and the tents are just gorgeous... ;-)

  6. Happily, these days camping out doesn't always involve tents ... isn't Sydney home of 'glamping'??!!

  7. What a lovely mural! I always enjoy hearing about someone who really, really loves their home - and guess Paul Keating must really, really love Sydney! I would love to visit one day, but until then, I content myself with "visiting" through the wonderful photos posted in blogs!

  8. The mural looks like a fantasy or dreamland.

  9. The mural wanders over a wall within a wall - house wall within property wall! The effect is creative working within the concept of the mural! Fascinating! Ahhh Sydney...

  13. I think the 'roadworks ahead' adds something to the tranquil scene. Perhaps that is also pure Sydney?!
