R is for Rockfishing

Rockfishing is the most dangerous sport in New South Wales, on the average around a dozen people die a year from being swept off the rocks and drowning in the sea. Although it was a calm day at Green Point near Angourie, rock fishers always have to be on their guard for a rogue wave and should never turn their backs on the ocean.

  1. It's a beautiful picture but what you tell is scary.

  2. Rock fishing looks so benign it is had to believe it is so dangerous.

I have posted on Hill End quite a few time over the years. See the posts labelled Hill End.

The Bridle Track is a stupendous drive (and yes scary in parts). But there was a big rock fall in one section a year or so ago and that section of the road has been closed indefinitely so it is no longer a through road. What a loss!

  3. It's a beautiful location, but a rogue wave would definitely make it dangerous.

  4. Beautiful scene, but I hadn't heard of rock fishing. What do they do with the rocks when they catch them?
    P.S. Jest a just. I mean, just a jest. :-)

Does the hidden danger make it more beautiful, I wonder.

  8. Living on a rocky coast where tourists think they are safe to fish anywhere, I understand the dangers....There is at least 1 'swept away' angler per year.....
